2024 African Cup - Augsburg
The African Cup took place for the third time this year, organized by Afro Passion under the leadership of the dedicated founder Sunday Temitope Olaniyan. This now very popular soccer tournament once again attracted numerous participants and visitors and once again demonstrated how sporting competitions can bring people together.
Participants were:
Somalia, Morocco, Cameroon, Hermes Mania FC, Gambia, Kongo, Team Afrique, Guinea, Nigeria, Senegal, Djibouti and Ghana-Black Star.
The atmosphere was unique: colorful, happy, sporty and relaxed at the same time. There was a family atmosphere in which every visitor was warmly welcomed. What was particularly impressive was the variety of offers and activities that we (Afro Passion) had put together. There was a bouncy castle for the little guests, which made children's eyes shine. New this year were the homemade, ice-cold African juices and smoothies, which, together with snacks such as samosas and fresh vegetable wraps, provided culinary highlights. An Italian ice cream truck rounded off the culinary offerings and offered a refreshing change.
The opening of the tournament was once again taken over by Mr. Enninger, the sports officer for the city of Augsburg, which brought great joy to the organizers.
Another highlight was the participation of Ms. Wild, the second mayor of the city of Augsburg, who watched the final and presented the winner's trophy to the Nigerian team - a special moment and a great honor for everyone involved.
A total of 12 teams competed in the 3rd African Cup. Nigeria and Somalia played in an exciting final, which after a 1-1 draw ended in a thrilling penalty shootout. Finally, Nigeria was able to win the cup. Particularly worth mentioning is the participation of the Ghana team (Black Star), which traveled from Nuremberg and therefore had the longest journey.
The day was characterized by passion, good music, delicious food and a great atmosphere. Despite a short rain interruption, the tournament continued with even more enthusiasm. Many teams and guests celebrated until 9 p.m. and enjoyed the supporting program, which included food and drink as well as African drums.
The aim of the African Cup is to bring people from different communities together - and this was achieved impressively again this year. We were particularly pleased that some new communities were added and enriched the event.
Sunday Temitope Olaniyan: “A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this wonderful event. Our big thanks go especially to TSV Firnhaberau, who once again made it possible for us to host the tournament”.
We are already looking forward to the African Cup 2025 and are excited to see what new highlights await us!
Tournament results:
Nigeria 1st, Somalia 2nd and Cameroon 3rd
